Green Lantern: Kilowog Revealed

Posted in Green Lantern Movie News by Darth Death on August 10, 2010 by Tonk

So there’s been a crap-load of GL movie news that’s been doing the rounds since I last reported on it (last year..ooops!). So I see little point in re-capping it here. If you have a general interest in the development of the Green Lantern Movie then you’ll be across most of the major news by now.

What I will say is that I reckon Ryan Reynolds is going to be great as Hal Jordan. The interviews of him that I’ve seen thus far all seem to suggest that he has a good handle on the character and really wants to do the right things by the property and by the fans. And the same must be said for Mark Strong who is playing Sinestro. Both these guys seem to be relishing their parts and as a fan of Green Lantern, this comes as a great relief. It’s certainly refreshing to see the stars of a major motion picture really digging their roles.

Anyway, on to the main reason for this post:

Today has seen the leaked image of Green Lantern Kilowog. Is this image legit? It seems so. Do I like it? Yeah, I think so.

For those unfamiliar with the character, he was first introduced in the mid Eighties as one of the alien GL’s assigned to Earth during the short lived Green Lantern Corps series (volume 2 issues 201-224). Later, in the early Nineties, Hal Jordan’s history and origin was re-worked during the famous ‘Emerald Dawn’ period and Kilowog was ret-conned to become a trainer of freshly recruited Green Lanterns and played a part in Hal’s early development as a Green Lantern. Over time, Kilowog’s importance as member of the GLC and his significance in GL mythology has grown and grown. Today, he is a firm fan favorite.

Kilowog is a character that is open to visual interpretation. His alien form has seen many variations throughout the 25 years that the character has been around. There really is no definitive version of Kilowog. Different comic artists like to interpret him in different ways and I see this movie version of him as a continuation of that. My main gripe is that I would have liked the lower jaw to be heavier. But hey, whatever. As with Hal’s costume that was revealed during the lead up to SDCC, I’ll reserve final judgement until I see it in action.

GREEN LANTERN: Rorscharch as Sinestro?

Posted in Green Lantern Movie News by Darth Death on October 18, 2009 by Tonk

Just found this tid-bit on the AintItCool website:

And ‘insider’ is reporting that WATCHMEN revelation Jackie Earle Haley maybe up for the role of arch villain SINESTRO in 2011’s GREEN LANTERN.

I’ve made it pretty well known to anyone who will listen that I consider WATCHMEN to be the the best film of 2009 and easily one of the best comic to film adaptations ever done. Haley’s portrayal of psycho-superhero Rorscharch was absolutely spot on and still gives me goosebumps whenever I watch it.

But is he right for Sinestro? Well I dunno. But I’m certainly open to the idea. Martin Campbell (director) has pulled off some pretty canny casting moves in the past. Maybe Haley as Sinestro could be his latest coup.

Personally, I would be looking for someone physically taller, broader and a little more menacing. But if this rumour proves true, then I’m happy to be proven wrong.

GREEN LANTERN Pulls stumps

Posted in Green Lantern Movie News by Darth Death on October 18, 2009 by Tonk

As predicted, production of the GREEN LANTERN movie has left Australian shores. Well, to be honest, it never actually got here in the first place.

Seems the descent of the US dollar is no longer making off-shore production viable so it looks like the production will shift to Mexico or Canada.

As a massive fan of Green Lantern, I’m not too phased by this. As a movie goer it makes little difference to me where this film is shot but I am disappointed that our local film industry won’t get the boost that a production of this size would bring. I am kinda relieved that at least no Australian landmarks will creep their way into the film. I remember being taken aback while watching Ghost Rider when shots of the Yarra River and Telstra Dome made their way into the picture. I wanna escape with GREEN LANTERN and a shot of downtown Sydney doubling as Coast City won’t enable me to do that.

My main concern is that this could mean the relase date of GREEN LANTERN is once again pushed back. There’s no news yet regarding this, but I’ll be sure to report anything if it comes to light.

In the meantime, I hope you’re all enjoying BLACKEST NIGHT. I know I am!

GREEN LANTERN: Uh oh…

Posted in Green Lantern Movie News by Darth Death on August 26, 2009 by Tonk

Damn Global Economy…It’s bad enough the stupid US Market screwed with our economy, now it threatens the much anticipated GREEN LANTERN MOVIE! Sons of bitches!

THIS ARTICLE reports that the production of the Green Lantern film may be in jeopardy due to the rising strength of the Australian dollar. The film was due to start shooting out here in 2010. One of the main reasons Hollywood likes to shoot in Australia is because of the better value for money. Now, with the value of the US dollar slipping, it seems the Green Lantern producers are having to reconsider where to shoot the film.

The release date for GREEN LANTERN has already been pushed back once. If the production moves location then certainly it will push the release date back further. I’m already struggling with the fact that I gotta wait 2 years for this thing. Any more delays and I may need therapy.

Anyway, check the article out for more details.

GREEN LANTERN: Fuck off Timberlake

Posted in Green Lantern Movie News by Darth Death on July 10, 2009 by Tonk

Apologies in advance: I’m posting this from the iPhone so if spelling is a bit erratic then its due to the fact that I’m typing in haste. Anyway, as you know we’ve been following the progress of the GREEN LANTERN MOVIE pretty closely. We love GL. He’s gotta be the coolest character in the DC Universe, hands down.

Anyway, it seems the role of Hal Jordan has been culled down to 3 contenders: Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds and Justin Timberlake.

All I can say is: go Bradley Cooper! The idea of Timberlake playing the Emerald Crusader is enough to make me vomit blood. I’m sure director Martin Campbell will be championing Cooper. At least I hope that’s the case… The very fact that Timberlake is even in the mix smacks of studio intervention. Fuck off Timberlake! Stick to your white trash dance music bullshit and stay the Hell away from my beloved GL. You are not and never will be worthy of playing Hal Jordan.

UPDATE: aintitcoolnews.com is reporting that the role has been awarded to Ryan Reynolds. For mine, he’s not the perfect choice but he sure shits on Timberlake from a great height. Looking forward to this project finally getting up and running now!

Green Lantern Movie Update Part 7

Posted in Green Lantern Movie News by Darth Death on February 25, 2009 by Tonk

I’m posting this from my phone so I’ll keep it brief. The Green Lantern movie has a realease date:

December 17th 2010.

Sweet.

UPDATE: The studio has revised the relaase date and pushed it back to June 2011. Maybe not a bad thing. Pays to take the time to get it right. Now they just gotta cast a decent Hal and we’ll be on our way!

Green Lantern Movie Update Part 6

Posted in Green Lantern Movie News by Darth Death on February 23, 2009 by Tonk

As work continues on SUBURBAN KNIGHTS Episode 2: DEATH CRUSH, we thought we’d take a breather to bring you some more info on the development of the GREEN LANTERN MOVIE.

Info has been in short supply it must be said. However, we have managed to piece together a small snapshot of just where things are at with this highly anticipated project:

It seems fairly certain now that the film will shoot here in Australia with principal photography due to commence later this year. Whether it is QLD, NSW or VIC that lands the project has not been determined but it is an exciting development. Hollywood likes to shoot films out here because its cheaper and the expertise is on par with anything on offer in the US. And money saved in location costs means more money can be spent on script, FX, marketing etc. And that’s gotta be good.

Rumor has it a number of Australian based post-production houses are also pitching for some of the FX work. Whether all FX will be handled locally or only a portion has not been determined. But certainly it will provide a boost to our local industry.

It appears Warners is also making a pretty big attempt to lure Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) to direct. This is the most exciting news to date. Campbell is a seasoned action director with a classy resume. Exactly the sort of credibility that GL deserves. So here’s hoping Campbell lands the job. Originally scriptwriter Greg Berlanti was to direct the GL film, but it now seems Warners want some experience to see this through.

Well that’s about it so far on current news relating to our favourite ring-slinger’s big screen debut. Fingers crossed this project continues to gain momentum. HAL JORDAN and his LEGION of fans deserve nothing less than a great film. Rumor has it the script kicks arse. Personally, I can’t wait to see it. Let’s just hope they don’t cast some pretty-boy twat in the lead role. To be continued…
